Flag of Galicia

Galicia is a region occupying the extreme north western corner of the peninsula, and was called Finis Terrae (Land's End) by the Romans, who believed it to be the westernmost land in the world. It was widely known in the Middle Ages thanks to the Route of Saint James, the principal pilgrimage route in Europe, which is still traveled to this day. Its jagged coastline, formed by a succession of wide, rocky estuaries, is especially noteworthy of the region.

It consists of the La Coruña, Lugo, Ourense, and Pontevedra provinces. Galicia has a culture all its own, a rich folkloric tradition, and its own language, Galego, which is said to influence both the Spanish and Portuguese languages.
