Santander, the capital of the Cantabria province, is a port city located on a beautiful bay and flanked by enormous beaches. The city, well designed and elegant, suffered damage during the great fire of 1941. Painstaking reconstruction restored the city's former charm. It is home to the beautiful La Magdalena Palace, and a museum which owns a valuable collection of paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries.
